ok, swapping my new Racer brown cam within a few weeks and I want to start the parts gathering to make the thrash go as smooth as possible. so far, here is what I think I will need. -intake gaskets -waterpump gaskets -timing cover gasket -cam lube (already talked to don for which one) -oil/filter.
just a quick list off the top of my head, am I missing anything?

Valve cover gasket set. You could reuse the old ones if they are a good quality set. installed not too long ago.
Did you buy lifters from jim too, or did you get them locally.
You might want to change the oil after the run in, but that's being pretty picky. If you're due for a change, then it's as good a time as any.

yeah, I got lifters, too. I am due for a change, so I will do so after run in. good call, psycho, I forgot about that!! where is the best place to get one. I have time so I can mailorder, or would one from the parts store be ok..... does anyone make decent VC gaskets? I have rubber ones that were installed just before the summer, and they would be ok, but I would prefer the ones that have that thin layer of metal in between layers of gasket material, like they make for the Small blocks.

On a BB does the timing cover bolt to the oil pan? Sb's need the pan dropped. Degree wheel? I'm told a RB cam you just line up the dots.

the timing cover bolts to the oil pan on the big blocks as you suspected You can just line up th e dots on any cam installation , but I never do it , it is definatly worth the time to degree it in & make sure it is right , I have seen cams out by as much as 13* , the engine runs like crap this far out & makes no power or milage , also the chain gears can be machined incoreectly too Just degree it !

While you are there, why not put in a quality timing chaing (unless your current one is fairly new).

I am told and I believe it. One of the reasons we buy RB cams is you dont have to worry about degreeing it. Just line up da dots.

I'd get a set of Cometic valve cover gaskets. I think they are comparible in price and you'll never have to replace them again... weatherseal them to the vavle cover and use studs in the heads for easy install.
Also, I'd degree the cam either way, measure twice cut once kind of thing. Get the valley pan gasket that has the heat crossover blocked too.
How are your carb gaskets?

Uggggrrrrr...you all fail your engine building 101 class.....you all forgot the front seal...LOL
You can buy it all as a kit from about any auto parts store or Cometic has a kit made from the new Chemically Blown Nitrile Rubber (foam) Laminated over Aluminum, AFM series...no sealer, no leaks and they'll never stick to the parts so future clean-up is a breeze.
The Aluminum center section has the foam lamination on both sides so you get a perfect seal .....no leaks! They come in various thicknesses .018, .032, .045 and .060 depending on the application. Temp range is over 250* and the material has a 85% recovery (could be re-used in a pinch) Because it maintains the 85% recovery retork is not required.
Water Pump C5615 AFM 8.95 Thermostat C5616 AFM 1.25 Oil pan C5617 AFM 12.95 Timing cover & seal C5620 AFM 16.96
..and you guy's..."My Members" as some people would refer to you as....LOL... get 30% off (Jobber Pricing)
Look at that pan gasket...your cost for a PAPER Felpro is about $9.00 (I just called) and your price on a Cometic is $9.00....what would you rather have?...or should I ask this question after you've just spent 2 hours scrapping all the glue and crap off your pan and been laying under the dripping engine for an hour cleaning the pan rails.....LOL..isn't this fun!
