Dave:
Painting the inside of an engine used to be quite common. It was felt that by sealing the pores of the cast iron, that oil drain back would be improved.
Most old time shops used to use GE Glyptol. Some used Rust Oleum to save money. Glyptol will stay on and not flake off.(which is a good thing) but it is quite expensive.

My old engine in my pickup had the inside painted with rustolium. I put 150.000 miles on it and never had any issues with the paint but the darn thing never ran cool at an idle regardless of what I did to it. I replaced it with a different long block 3 or 4 years ago and this one was not painted inside it does not overheat at a idle. I don't know if their is a common denominator here or not? I think it is like a 70's disco craze just a fad?

Ok, are you sure it was not a Ford or import board you were on? Theroiticaly, as stated earlier, I could see the advantages of sealing the inside of the block for oil return improvement, but what about when the paint comes off? Thats stupid. If you are serious about doing it, why not use a block filler? If the block filler comes apart, you got way too many other issues to worry about than the pickup clogging

After the block been dip and free of oil and grease I put a propane burner under the block(on stand) cover the opening, when hot I put a thin coat of rust paint and leave it cool off then I reheat and cool off 4 to 5 time that paint bake right in. Been doing this for years never seen a flake yet took the intake off many many time never seen paint missing.
