I have reason to believe my cam gear may have been marked wrong, the dot for lining up. I know I should centerline the cam with a dial indicator, but is there a quick way of checking, like the amount of degrees apart the timing mark and cam keyway are on a small block?

You are probably right. I just installed a new Crane Double roller in my 360 and it was off on all three key ways. It was off by about 30'. I had to top dead center #1 then roll the cam to the right spot to line it up.

Wouldn't it be nice to find a cam grinder who could grind it right on the money, grind in any advance required and take enough pride in his machine work.
Jim at Racer Brown starts work at 6am personally grinding every cam that they sell, he calibrates his machine daily and takes full personal responsibility for everything that leaves his shop.
This is why he's hard to reach until 2PM EST, he washes up and goes to the office to offer advice and take orders until about 6-7PM.
You'll never hear the "Oh we fired that guy" excuse from Racer Jimmy, it's perfect or it doesn't leave the shop. You'll realize what you've got when you degree your 1st Racer Brown Cam, it'll be dead nuts on.
Put one on a profiler, every lobe is perfect in lift , duration and lobe center...That's what makes that extra 10-20 more HP thats takes you from the Dog Team to the Lead Dog, the view is much better up front....Mush!

That doesnt help you if your timing chain is off wich isnt uncommon. What about the crank key way. I bet Mopar has messed up there share of them.
